ANCIENT GREEK VESSELS

INTRODUCTION

Mrs. Anderson and Sixth Grade Students-

We are in need of examples of Ancient Greek Vessels. There has been a fire in our storage building and we need your help. We have heard what excellent artists you all are and need your assistance with this project. Could each of your classes do four examples of Ancient Greek Vessels for us to exhibit at our Loympic Center when we have our annual games? They need to be light weight for the purpose of shipping so think about what they could be made of instead of clay. Best of luck with this project and thank you for your immediate attention in this matter.

Mr. Napadoplys

Curator of the National Archeological Museum in Athens Greece

TASK

IT WILL ENGAGE YOU AS A STUDENT TO DO RESEARCH ON A CHOSEN AREA THAT CULMINATES IN A FINISHED PROJECT. YOU WILL BE DIVIDED INTO FOUR EQUAL GROUPS IN THE ROOM. AFTER RESEARCHING, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE FOUR GREEK PERIODS OF ART. STUDENTS WILL WORK IN GROUPS OF 6 AND YOU WILL THEN DESIGN A GROUP VESSEL UTILIZING PARTS/CHARACTERISTICS FROM ONE OR MORE GREEK ART PERIODS. THE FINISHED PRODUCT WILL BE A UNIQUE GREEK STYLE VESSEL REPRESENTING ONE OR MORE GREEK PERIODS OF ART. YOUR VESSEL WILL BE DISPLAYED AT YOUR CULMINATING ACTIVITY.

CONCLUSION

AS GROUPS OF STUDENTS YOU HAVE SHARED YOUR RESULTS AND CRITIQUED YOUR PROJECT WITH THE CLASS. STUDENTS YOU HAVE DISPLAYED VESSELS AT YOUR CULMINATING ACTIVITY AND YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO TELL SOMEONE WHAT YOUR VESSEL LOOKS LIKE AND WHAT CHARACTERISTICS IT HAS, FEET(HOW MANY), HANDLE OR HANDLES, LID, FOOTED, WIDE/NARROW, SPOUT, STAND,TALL/SHORT,DESIGNS/FIGURES (TELL A STORY?), AND COLORS. YOU WILL BE ABLE TO CONNECT BETWEEN ANCIENT AND MODERN DAY VESSELS, TELL SOMEONE IF GREEK DESIGNS ARE STILL USED TODAY, HOW AND WHY.
